In that instance prior to going the route of replacing parts, I would, if you haven't already, reset BIOS settings to default, as things like overclocks and certain BIOS settings can affect USB ports.USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller (USBXHCI) Service Defaults in Windows 10

IF the problems persisted, then it would be more likely to suggest something hardware related causing the issues, and perhaps then look at changing motherboard (or your choice of a full upgrade). If Linux correctly detected and allowed the normal use of USB ports then again my suspicion would be that something in Windows is corrupted and perhaps consider a full backup and totally clean install. a Linux Mint live DVD or USB key which don't involve any permanent changes to the system) to see whether those allowed the use of a USB ports. I still think it's odd that BIOS allows you to use the USB ports properly (and Windows does not) and I think that if I was trying to look at it in person I would be testing another OS on it, completely non-related to Windows (e.g. You can do it without deleting your personal files, although it's sensible to keep a backup just in case.Īpologies for the delay replying. If no joy then you might consider using the "reset this PC" option which will effectively re-install Windows. This will check system files for corruption and hopefully fix any that are found. Open an elevated command prompt (type "cmd" into the search box, and right click the Command Prompt app that will be found, and choose "Run As Administrator"). No guarantees, but I've found them pretty good with solving things I've contacted them about. It'll ask you some questions and ask that you've tried removing USB devices and updating drivers, but should eventually put you into a chat with a human. Attempt to get personal help from Microsoft support through the Windows 10 "Get Help" app. trying to troubleshoot), then I'd suggest choosing "load optimised defaults" option in BIOS to reset them back to default. Another thing, if you have at any point made changes to the USB settings in BIOS (e.g. a Windows 10 installer) then you may struggle with no working USB ports. The trouble is, that if you need to create recovery media (e.g. Yes the USB keyboard and mouse working fine in BIOS suggest to me there's no serious hardware problem, so I think there's certainly hope of being able to recover it. OK, not the same issue I had then with usb.inf. I really appreciate the insight and your opinion about when others think it's the drivers. Building a PC is pretty much a last ditch effort because I'm getting so desperate haha.

Building a new PC is a rather extreme solution to this! The fact that the mouse and keyboard works until the OS boots strongly suggests it's a software problem. This driver is not for Windows 8/8.1/10 as they have USB 3.0 support built in, so a separate driver is not required. Which version of Windows are you using? For Windows 7 only - as you mention the xHCI controller is showing the error, it may be worth trying re-installing the Intel USB 3.0 driver. And the problem normally remains unsolved.

But of course, manufacturers do not write drivers for generic USB keyboards or mice, as they are built into Windows. Most topics I've seen on similar issues someone will insist that your drivers are corrupted and you need to download the latest drivers from the manufacturer and update them.

My current PC is about 4 years old and I have an MSI Gaming 5 MOBO, i7-4790k, 16gb of RAM, and a GTX 1080. I'm not sure if this will fix my problem of not having my USB ports not think anything is there but it's one last thing to try before just building a new computer.

I've tried uninstalling them all and restarting my computer as well as choosing the options to not let Windows power down those ports. (Code 10) The requested operation was unsuccessful. The last one has a yellow triangle with an exclamation point and when I go to the properties it says |This device cannot start. When I go into my device manager, under the USB controllers I have: 2x Generic USB Hub, 2x Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller, 2x USB Root Hub, and one USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller. The last thing that I can think of is it may be related to this issue. I've tried practically everything under the sun that I've found online as well as in other topics I've made on other sites. I think that the ports are getting power but no data. They work with other computers and I've plugged other keyboards and mice into my computer with the same results. I'm able to use a PS/2 keyboard and mouse no problem. They are usable in the BIOS but once the computer boots they turn off. I've been having some issues with my computer for a while now wherein my USB keyboard and mouse doesn't work.
